The Great Create
The brainchild of local artist Emma Carter, The Great Create Festival of the Arts, has taken place at National Trust’s Greenway for three consecutive years. It has is one of the area's true public celebrations of the artistic talent hidden within Devon. Having realised that there was an urgent requirement for the multitudes of talented people to be able to express themselves to the public and their peers alike, The Great Create was founded with one specific goal in mind: To give exceptional emerging and established artists of all genres a showcase to celebrate and promote their creativity. With the help and support of local people and organisations The Great Create was a huge success, leading to a Torbay Artsbase award for 'Creative Event of the Year' in 2008. A true celebration of the arts, the festivals have been an inspiration to all that attended and partook.
In 2010 Emma Carter has been invited to become the permanent artist in residence at Greenway to build upon the legacy and reputation that the Great Create has built. Selected guest artists such as David Cowell, Dr. Linda Khatir, Phil Dixon, Christine Sweetman and internationally acclaimed Tom Adams will also be working on curated, site specific and sensitive art projects during the season from March until October. The remit set by contemporary art curator Emma Carter is to produce work of exceptional standard, with the theme of ‘English Eccentricity’ and to use Greenway as a platform to extend and further each artists’ own creative practice. Full residency will take place during July featuring poetry, installation, sculpture, painting and performance. Emma’s residency will run from March until September 2010.
Greenway is situated down river from Dartmouth at Agatha Christie’s former holiday home set in the glorious woodland estate in Galmpton, Devon.
Artists in residence Wednesday, Thursday and Friday 11.30 – 2.30pm.
